Parker removing nail from house

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) has been an incredible and remarkable experience for me that has allowed me to grow and become more appreciative as a person. I have been able to be a part of ASB for the last two years, traveling to New Orleans, Louisiana both times. My first trip to New Orleans was a very educational and memorable experience. Being able to learn about Hurricane Katrina in a different perspective was humbling, seeing the neighbourhoods that are still recovering as well as the resilience of the people who are still living their, making the most of their lives. Being able to work on a house which helps improve someone’s life is very fulfilling, especially when we got to meet the future owner and see the appreciation in their eyes.

You form great friendships that last well beyond the end of your ASB trip.

I knew that at the end of my first experience that being part of ASB again was something that I wanted to do. I came back to the New Orleans trip as a student team leader the following year because I wanted to take a more active role in helping others experience the same things that made my first trip so memorable.

ASB attracts great people who are motivated, interesting and really friendly. You are able to get along with everyone almost instantaneously. It’s refreshing being able to meet students outside of your program and learn from them as well. You form great friendships that last well beyond the end of your ASB trip. I am extremely grateful that I have been able to be a part of ASB all these years as it has been one of the defining memories at my career at Western.
